Andrei Luchici

AI Researcher, Technology Leader and Educator


Andrei Luchici is Associate Professor and Director of the Center of Research in Artificial Intelligence at the Romanian-American University. His research focuses on autonomous organisations in which AI agents collaborate, plan, negotiate and execute tasks within defined objectives and constraints.

Before entering academia, Andrei served three times as Chief Technology Officer, developing AI products for advertising technology and enterprise software. This experience gives him a practical understanding of how to move AI solutions from experimental models into real-world organisations.

An experienced independent trainer, he has delivered AI programmes for SMEs, executive teams and multinational companies across banking, retail, manufacturing, aerospace and professional services. He also teaches AI for Business within an MBA programme in Germany and co-founded the AI Training Center at the Romanian-American University.

His work combines artificial intelligence, decision neuroscience and complex-systems thinking to explore how AI can help us understand and guide organisations, markets and other adaptive systems.

Professor Laurențiu Simion, MD, PhD

Surgical Oncologist, Palliative Care Educator and Academic Leader

Professor Laurențiu Simion is a senior consultant in general surgery, Professor of Surgery at Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Head of Surgical Department I at the Bucharest Oncological Institute.

His clinical and academic expertise spans oncological surgery, minimally invasive surgery, palliative care and healthcare management. He holds a PhD in Medicine, a master’s degree in health services management and habilitation authorising him to supervise doctoral research.

Professor Simion is actively involved in medical education and professional capacity building. He serves as Bucharest University Centre Coordinator and lecturer within Romania’s National Palliative Care Certificate Programme for Physicians and the National Oncological Surgery Certificate Programme.

An author and co-author of medical textbooks, manuals and scientific publications, he is also a certified hospital evaluator with the Romanian National Authority for Quality Management in Health. He brings to MERIC Academy extensive experience at the intersection of cancer surgery, palliative care, clinical quality and medical education.

Matthew Sheldon Ames, PhD

Educational Innovation, Digital Learning and AI Strategy Expert

Matthew Sheldon Ames is an educational-technology leader with more than 20 years of international experience in instructional design, digital learning and institutional transformation across the United States, East Africa and the Gulf region.

His work focuses on building practical, human-centred digital learning ecosystems that strengthen teaching, faculty capability, student engagement and institutional performance. His expertise includes educational-technology strategy, online and blended learning, learning-centre development, instructional media and the responsible integration of artificial intelligence into education.

Matthew’s research examines motivation, belonging and confidence in digital learning, as well as the implications of AI for assessment, academic integrity, faculty development and university strategy. He has also contributed to health-professions education, digital health research and the development of contextually relevant medical-learning resources in Africa.

At MERIC Academy, Matthew brings a valuable combination of educational leadership, instructional-design expertise and cross-cultural experience to the development of engaging, scalable and effective learning programmes for healthcare professionals.

Dr Adrian Purcărea

Senior specialist in internal medicine and hepato-gastroenterology 

Dr Adrian Purcărea is a senior specialist in internal medicine and hepato-gastroenterology whose career brings together clinical excellence, scientific investigation and medical education. Trained in Bucharest and within Assistance Publique–Hôpitaux de Paris, he also served as a university assistant at the Faculty of Medicine in Strasbourg and holds a PhD in Medical Sciences, an MSc in Biophysics and advanced qualifications from Paris Descartes and Pierre and Marie Curie universities.

His clinical and research interests encompass acute internal medicine, liver disease, cardiometabolic risk, systemic inflammation, multimorbidity and emerging biomarkers for the early recognition of sepsis. An experienced clinical investigator and international speaker, Dr Purcărea teaches medical statistics, research methodology and the critical appraisal of scientific literature. Through MERIC Academy, he equips healthcare professionals to question evidence rigorously, interpret data confidently and translate research into better-informed clinical decisions.
